Lorenzo Montana – Eilatix 6.6

                Lorenzo Montana takes a minimal approach on ‘Eilatix’. Over the course of the album the sound feels reminiscent of early 90s techno. The barest elements are used for maximum effect. Patience is one of the hallmarks of the album. By letting the songs progress naturally there is a greater sense of melody. Simple beats convey a basic dance beat meshed with more introspective moments. Most of the power of the songs comes from their ability to take such a simple concept and explore it into oblivion. Little flourishes added take a few listens to fully appreciate.

                ‘Nepenthes’s Touch’ opens and gives a good sense of the overall mood on the album. ‘Byblis’ follows with an extremely dreamy melody. What’s strange is how towards this end this dreamy melody is paired with an extremely abrasive drum arrangement towards the end, seemingly out of nowhere. On ‘Qunatic Rajah’ things are kept extremely quiet. Percussion and rhythm comes from various glitches. The feeling is one of a large cavernous space. ‘Oval Wood’ has the most fun out of all the songs. Maintaining a bouncing beat, subtle melody and extreme flexibility it is a real joy of a song.

                Towards the end of the album the beat seems to drop out almost entirely. ‘Blue Stylidium’ takes a playful approach with frequency changes creating a rather warm melody. Here the beat is relatively subdued. Finally on the closer ‘Temporary Light’ Lorenzo touches upon an approach akin to Gas’s ‘POP’. ‘Eilatix’ is able to creatively do a lot with very little.

Charles Uzzell-Edwards born in South Wales in 1968 is a graffiti artist known by the moniker “Pure Evil” and is a stablemate of Banksy. He is also the son of Welsh painter John Uzzell Edwards. Uzzell-Edwards has exhibited globally.

In the early 90’s he was one of the designers for Anarchic Adjustment with Alan Brown and Nick Philip and released electronic ambient music on Pete Namlook’s FAX label, recording “Octopus” 1, 2 & 3 and “Dada” (under the pseudonym Drum Machine Circle) solo, producing “A New Consciousness” and “Create” 1 & 2 with Pete Namlook, recording “Supergroup” with Thomas Bullock, and “Audio” with Tetsu Inoue and Daimon Beail. The Pure Evil Gallery is run by Uzzell-Edwards and located in Shoreditch, London.

A New Dawn is the result of many long night jams in the basement of Pure Evil Studios.

Orlando Voorn aka The Living Room is one of the first Dutch musicians to establish a vital connection between Detroit and Amsterdam in the early 90’s. Voorn has long been recognized as one of the Netherland’s most original and ingenious producers in the world of electronic dance music. He began DJing at the early age of 12 years old and later went on to win his first scratch competition at Amsterdam “Club Flora Palace”. Subsequently he made a name for himself under the alias “Frequency” with a classic label known as Lower East Side Records with titles such as “Where is Your Evidence” “Kiss the Sky” and “Industrial Metal”.

As a result of these tracks Voorn was introduced to Juan Atkins and they later started to collaborate & produce tracks together at Voorn’s home studio.Soon after they would join forces and produce the well know track called “Game One” which became a classic record on Atkin’s label “Metroplex” and later it reprised on Voorn’s imprint “Nightvision” double CD Compilation 1996.

Voorn also did recordings for a legendary Detroit label “KMS” an imprint of Kevin Saunderson using yet another alias known as “Fix” where he created a dance floor destroyer track called “Flash” which remains in many DJ’s crates at this moment. “Flash” became a hit in the Detroit clubs first before the record had broken out internationally. Voorn has a well know history of working with Detroits originator’s including Derrick May’s imprint “Fragile” under yet another alias “Complex” entitled “Midi Merge”.

For his latest album under the guise of the Living Room Voorn showcases his more gentle Ambient Techno side on ‘Armchair Education’

Kurtz and DJ Paloma Frausun create their Dark Ambient/ Gothic/ Industrial music and compose experimental videos that utilize religious, historical, horror themes and social issues both on stage and online. They draw inspiration from bands such as Dead Can Dance, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Death in June and film directors Leni Riefenstahl, Fritz Lang, David Lynch, as well as the literary works of Rumi, Nietzsche, and William S. Burroughs. Unconventional tones are utilized,including screams from a mad house, Latin invocations, classical strings, and ambient chants, with hard beats and noise assault.

“My inspiration is as varied as the elements in our music. A pounding Industrial beat will be mixed with a Call to Prayer and sitars. A blend of the organic and electronic.” When the duo take stage, they bring not only their music, with live experimentation and effects, but unique guests: BDSM performers, burlesque dancers, painters, poets, torture and shock talents to make every show a totally unique experience. Each show also includes Kurtz Frausun enduring a blood-letting ritual, performed by Paloma.

“Our shows become Total Environments: Billowing incense, hypnotic videos, subliminal audio/video messages, etc. The audience is either entranced or repulsed. Either way, I consider the show a success. A number of venues in D/FW have refused to book us because we scare the crowd too much.” Kurtz Frausun.

Willem Gator aka Giuseppe Musmeci is a self-taught composer, guitarist and electronic music programmer. City Of Sadness is the artist’s third album under his Willem Gator alias. The artist’s rich background in electronic production allows him to create highly distinctive grooves crafted by his very personal views on sound and beat research. What comes out of these recordings is a unique blend of acid house kicks, downtempo beats with junglesque phat basslines, oriental moods and overlapped with a multitude of orchestral instruments. In his own words the artist says “City of sadness is a photography of a time, of the people I met and the emotion they gave to me”

Willem Gator has performed in hundreds of concerts and has completed four tours throughout Europe, sharing the stage with musicians from all over the world. Among these were FM Einhet (Einsturzende Neubauten), Flying Luttenbachers, Unsane, DJ Spooky, Pansonic, Nobokazu Takemura, U-Cef, Battles, Art Brut, etc… In the live set, Willem Gator is joined by Davide Trovato (bass) and Stefano Rigano (video). While you listen to these tracks, you’ll be able to see and feel the places, faces and ambience of the streets in Hong Kong, the smothering cubby-hole in Kowloon, and the crowd of motorbikes in Taipei.

krill.minima is the exotic ambient project of Martin Juhls from Dortmund, Germany. Besides his housy clickdub moniker “Falter” and his orchestral inspired “Marsen Jules” tracks his project krill.minima is about the idea of mixing warmth, emotion and pop-appeal with exotic and experimental sounds, modern soundtrack, clicking rhythms and ambient constructions.

Sekundenschlaf is the artists fourth album and even if his music sounds personal and fresh his influences reach far back to the sound-imaginations and concepts of timeless composers like Brian Eno, Erik Satie, Steve Reich, Stockhausen, Pierre Henry and modern sound innovators like Sonic Youth, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Alva Noto and Rhythm&Sound.

“Everything I hear is available material” is a quote by Music-Concrete creator Pierre Henry which is very close to Martin’s procedure of making his ambient music. Most of his rhythm sounds are based on ordinary and non ordinary noises which he recorded in his living room.

Even if this sounds like an experimental way of making music Martin has a quite different approach of creating his atmospheric tracks. “Mostly when I start producing a new track or project I have a clear sound picture, emotion and atmosphere in mind which I want to make audible. Then I start collecting the sounds, chords and fragments which I think could work to create a comparable acoustic surrounding.”
